KAUAI, HAWAII We told you about Maui last month, but in our continuing effort to warm you up, don't forget Kauai. This is not a promo picture; we took it with our pocket camera, and its hard not to come out perfect. The Grand Hyatt on the south shore of the islanddoesn'thave just hammocks waiting for you, but two-and-a-half acres of swimming lagoons, multi-tier pools, and meandering rivulets, plus 602 rooms, built in 1990 and renovated a year ago. Owned by the venerable Takenaka family from Japan, its the only Grand Hyatt resort in the world (theres 44 Hyatt Regency resorts and one Park Hyatt).

Theyre proud of their environmentalism: the employee parking lot is covered in solar panels; they recycle 15 tons of glass, cans, and paper a month; the designers maximized trade wind flow coming from the northeast to create natural ventilation for guest rooms; and they switched from chlorine to ozone in the water two years ago--that means chemical use is cut 60% and your skin and hair dont dry out. Average winter temp: 75 to 77. More info.
