Intu are preparing to begin work on 110K SF of extra floorspace at the Trafford Centre, Place North West reports.

The £74M scheme will "expand and refresh" the centre's stand-alone 200K SF Barton Square extension, which opened in 2008.

The former Marks & Spencer store is now vacant, the retailer having consolidated into the main mall, and this space will play a part in the rethink. The former BHS store will be converted for Primark.

If work on site begins this spring it could be completed by mid-2019.

Intu won planning permission for the Leach Rhodes Walker-designed scheme in 2011 but have waited before pushing on with the redevelopment, which includes a new glazed roof.

Intu have confirmed that they are working with contractors Vinci at this stage, but will be appointing a main contractor soon.
