This Is What A Boom Town Looks Like: Manchester's 64 Tower Cranes

Placeholder

Manchester's tower crane count briefly reached a record 64 cranes this summer, as the city's building boom reaches new heights.

One crane has since been removed, bringing Manchester back to 63, which was the previous high, first recorded in the last peak in construction in 2005, according to data from UrbInfo reported by PlaceNorthWest.

UrbInfo data also shows there are more residential units under construction than ever before (17,556, up from 16,758 in July), and more office space under construction than at any time in the last 10 years (1.54M SF).

The data business says there are now 110 construction schemes of all types in the central Manchester area, compared to barely a dozen four years ago. If that sounds thin, then step back another four years to 2010, when there were just three tower cranes in the city centre.
