Tesla is charging ahead with a Santa Monica Boulevard project near West Hollywood that will replace a shuttered Shakey's Pizza Parlor.

The renovated restaurant will include a combination diner, drive-in theater and charging station for the company's electric cars.

Site preparation is happening now, according to Urbanize, which cited reporting by OttoMate, a newsletter focused on the intersections of food automation and robotics.

The project, which has the look of a classic diner, is expected to offer charging stations for 30 cars. Plans submitted to the city include a drive-in movie theater in the project. The project documents describe the facility as one story with a rooftop built out for dining.

The concept is one that Tesla founder Elon Musk has been mulling since at least 2021, when he tweeted about the idea

Representatives for the project did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

PwC has estimated that the electric vehicle supply equipment market, including chargers, will expand from a roughly $6B to a $100B industry nationally by 2040. California is a leader in EVs: About a quarter of all cars sold in the second quarter of this year were zero-emissions vehicles, according to the California Energy Commission.
