A historic YMCA building in Pomona will undergo a multimillion-dollar restoration and renovation as it transforms into a new mixed-use center.

Spectra Co. will provide historic restoration and renovation of the property that consists of two free-standing buildings totaling 80K SF into a live-work and creative office space. The mixed-use center will also feature venues to hold concerts and special events and a café and lounge.

“Our goal is to maintain the historic integrity of this landmark building while adaptively reusing the creative space in a sustainable manner that will support the visions and goals of our community,” Spectra Co. President and founder Ray Adamyk said during a groundbreaking ceremony Feb. 21 at the YMCA building at 350 North Garey Ave. in Pomona.

Adamyk said he takes great pride in restoring the YMCA building that has been a fixture in the community for nearly a century. Spectra has been based in Pomona for a long time.

“We look forward to restoring the YMCA to its original grandeur,” he said.

Spectra purchased the property for $2.65M in 2017. Built in 1920, the building is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Adamyk said he plans to relocate his company to the YMCA building once renovation is complete. A nonprofit that assists disadvantaged area youth is planning to sign on as a tenant, a company spokesman said.

Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval said the renovation of the YMCA building will anchor the revitalization of Pomona, a city 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

“Thousands of kids and families from throughout the Pomona Valley benefited from this historic structure for several decades, so we are thrilled with the plans for what is to come.”
