The Pasadena City Council has voted down Kimpton's plans to build a hotel in the historic YWCA building in Pasadena, though those plans received approval in August.

The plans were to build a six-story, 181-room Kimpton Hotel.

Approval was granted in August, but the project came back before the city council with a request for free rent and parking for 50 years, the Pasadena Star-News reports.

That request and growing pushback from area residents who did not want the project to go forward caused the city council to reject the plan this time.

Many residents were concerned the hotel would increase traffic in the area and overshadow existing buildings. Some residents filed a lawsuit over the project last year.

The city council plans to entertain other possible uses for the property.

The YWCA, which is across from Pasadena City Hall, has been vacant for decades.
