Bisnow's first-ever Houston Power Women event is just around the corner. In the lead-up to the big day, we'll be highlighting the event's honorees. Today's honoree is LUCID co-founder Lisa Pope-Westerman.

Throughout her career in architecture and design, Pope-Westerman has worked at nearly every level, at every scale. In 2018, she left her design director role at Gensler to launch her own firm, LUCID. Her eye has helped shape some of Houston's most iconic places, like the 5 Diamond Post Oak Hotel and the restaurant spaces of the ExxonMobil campus. Her award-winning work has been featured in Interior Design Magazine, Hospitality Design Magazine, Boutique Design and others.

Bisnow: Who was the first person to teach you how to be business savvy?

Pope-Westerman: David Rockwell was the first person that opened my eyes on how to sell creativity, articulating that better design equals a better experience ... equals a higher [return on investment].

Bisnow: What is the biggest challenge for the next generation of women?

Pope-Westerman: I believe that the next generation of women will have so many more opportunities. With more women in the workforce, there will be more female leadership, which will benefit all.

Bisnow: What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership?

Pope-Westerman: Providing a flexible work environment.

Bisnow: What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess?

Pope-Westerman: Celebrate other’s strengths and talents.

Bisnow: What are the most important decisions you make as a leader of your organization?

Pope-Westerman: Guiding our partnerships both internally and externally. It’s important that we all share the same level of passion for our work and respect for one another.
