CoreNet Fights Food Desert

Placeholder

The past two weekends, more than 50 CoreNet Houston volunteers grabbed wheelbarrows and lent a hand to the Last Organic Outpost. It's a resource for locally grown food and an educational hub for local schools, currently focusing on the neglected 5th Ward food desert, building home gardens and a neighborhood-wide orchard of fruit and nut trees. CoreNet picks a volunteer project every year; this year’s event was co-chaired by Regina Trippie and Barry Weiner and raised $4,800 in cash donations and more than $8k in in-kind services. SWA Group developed a master plan for the project, which included building, installing and landscaping a new entry fence; building tree planers, raised planters and seating; installing a chicken coop fence; building a tool shed; and planting a vegetable garden.
