Boarding Time

Houston
Placeholder

Yesterday we posed this riddle: There are 100 passengers boarding a 100-passenger airplane. When passenger 1 gets onto the plane, instead of getting into seat 1, he takes a random seat. Each of the remaining passengers (2, 3, 4, etc.) get onto the plane and take their seat if it is available or picks one of the remaining seats at random if it is not. What is the chance that the last passenger will get his seat? The answer is 50%: Passengers 2 through 99 will take their seat if it’s available, so all of those will definitely be filled. That leaves only 1 or 100 open for the last passenger. Hartman Income REIT senior property manager Matthew Calvano was first to respond and Higginbotham real estate practice leader William Crocker is our randomly-selected winner. Both get a free ticket to Bisnow’s Industrial Real Estate Summit.
