Two years after purchasing the former Salvation Army property at 1515 West Monroe, Cedar Street Cos. is moving forward with plans for a mixed-use apartment and retail complex.

The company will renovate the five-story building into 288 multifamily units and ground-floor retail, Crain's Chicago Business reports. It will preserve much of the historic brick facade and the design will play off the history of the property.

Cedar Street Managing Partner Mark Heffron told Crain's the redevelopment will focus on affordability. More details will be revealed after the company meets with community groups over the next month.

The property is on 3.1 acres in West Town, along Monroe Street between Ashland Avenue and Laflin Street. The Salvation Army had occupied the site for a century before moving to Humboldt Park in 2015.
