University of Chicago Medicine is diving into the South Loop real estate market. The university announced it will be opening an 18k SF clinic in Southgate Market, at Roosevelt Road and Canal Street. The space will open October 2016.

As we've mentioned before, the South Loop is exploding with development across several real estate sectors. With more residential on the way, including a proposed twin tower project at 113 E Roosevelt, U of C hopes to capitalize on the growing number of people moving to the area. It expects to treat up to 75,000 patients annually, once the new clinic opens, according to Crain's.

U of C Medicine's expansion past Hyde Park reflects the current trends driving healthcare real estate. Physicians groups are adopting a retail-based model and opening smaller clinics in neighborhood shopping centers, intending to treat their patients where they live. [Crain's]
