Logan Square Voters Approve Zoning Referendum

Logan Square residents concerned about the ongoing rush of development in their neighborhood overwhelmingly approved a referendum Tuesday favoring enforcing historic preservation statutes intended to protect the neighborhood's character. Nearly 93% of 32nd Ward voters approved the non-binding referendum.

Logan Square Preservation launched a petition drive to include the measure on the ballot. The group is concerned about city zoning policies, especially those pertaining to demolition, as developers swarm to Logan Square seeking opportunities, according to DNAInfo.

The referendum is intended to send a message to 32nd Ward Ald. Scott Waguespack, who is one of the more progressive members of City Council. Waguespack has a reputation as an alderman who carefully considers development opportunities in his ward and tends to seek consensus from the community. [DNA]
