Topgolf Drops Plans For Second Charlotte Location

Topgolf, which had planned to build a golf entertainment venue on a vacant tract at I-85 and West Mallard Creek Church Road, has decided not to do so. The company did not give a specific reason, though the plans did engender fairly stiff opposition from neighbors concerned about increased traffic and noise and light pollution in the area, the Charlotte Observer reports.

“Together, with Topgolf, we decided that this is not the best use of space for the golf complex,” Matt Browder, one of the developers, said in a statement. “We know that mixed-use development is appropriate and we are re-evaluating the use of that portion of the site plan.”

The developers also found during prep work what might be an important archaeological site, an unmarked slave cemetery in the ground next to Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church’s old cemetery.

Topgolf said it is evaluating other locations in the region. The company opened its first Charlotte location in June, drawing large crowds. The entertainment venue, though focused on golf, is also meant to appeal to non-golfers. Among other attractions, Topgolf includes a bar, restaurant, and a game in which players hit balls at glowing targets on the ground.
