Sears Axes Charlotte-Area Store In Monroe Crossing

As part of its recent contraction — possibly its death spiral — Sears Holdings is closing its 78K SF anchor department store at the Monroe Crossing shopping center in Monroe this summer. The store, which has been open since 2001, began a liquidation sale last weekend, the Charlotte Observer reports

The move is another blow for Monroe Crossing. J.C. Penney announced last month that it too will shutter an anchor at the mall this summer. The last anchor standing at the shopping center is Belk.

Sears closed its store in Eastridge Mall in Gastonia in late 2014, and that space has yet to be filled. Early this year, Macy's closed its Pineville store at Carolina Place Mall as part of that brand's contraction.
