| Despite torrential rains, about 400,000 motorheads swarmed uptown Charlotte over the weekend for the 17th Annual Food Lion Speed Street festival. The festival, which culminates in the Coca-Cola 600 (won this year by Kevin Harvick) features live music, a chance to shake hands with your favorite driver, and food. The menu included something called a "lug nut," a deep-fried (of course) ball of pimento cheese and bacon. (We might need a little motor oil to wash down one of those things.) The Charlotte Chamber's Jeff Edge tells us the industry has grown to become a $4B economic powerhouse employing about 18,000 people on the national circuit. "NASCAR has a great impact on the local economy," Jeff says. "It's definitely an industry we target here at the Chamber." |
