Old Mills = New Retail
Michael Bay
Want a new location for your furniture store but don't quite like what's for lease? Michael Bay, owner of Merinos Home Furnishings, found himself in that situation a few years ago and went into real estate redevelopment: he starting buying shuttered mills (NC has a number of those), including the long-abandoned Burlington Mills property on Mooresville's main street, which he rehabbed into a furniture-oriented retail property. Phase 1 opened last year.
Boyles Furniture
As part of Phase 2, next week Boyles Furniture will open a 30k SF loft-style warehouse space in the Merinos complex called Boyles Furniture Direct. Eventually, Michael says that the Mooresville location will open a pizzeria, a section featuring furniture artisans, and a European design center. (They know that pizza is the secret ingredient to furniture buying.)
