Charlotte Linked to Logistics Corridor
Crescent Corridor
Work has started on Charlotte Regional Intermodal Facility at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a brand-new place for the Norfolk Southern RR to transfer containerized cargo between trucks and trains and an important new aspect of the logistics infrastructure of the Charlotte metro area. Intermodal facilities are measured in "lifts" per year, or the number of containers they can handle, and by that measure, the new Charlotte facility can do 200k(heavy lifting, you might call it). But the facility is more than just an isolated spot for container lifting: According to Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman, it's one of the key hubs—think of them as jewels on a logistics string—of the railroad's "Crescent Corridor" (red on the map), which stretches from New Orleans to New Jersey.
