BALLANTYNE UNFAZED BY TENANT DEPARTURE
It's never a good thing when a major tenant decides to up and leave, but Bissell Cos doesn't seem flummoxed by AXA Equitable's departure from Ballantyne Corporate Park. In fact, Bissell SVP of leasing Barry Fabyan tells Bisnow there's already been interest in the space, which the insurance company won't vacate until mid-2013. (So Bissell Cos has a little while now to play the field, rebound a bit before settling down again.)

It's also full steam ahead for Bissell on 550k SF worth of spec office space in two buildings under way at the 535-acre office park, shown here against a setting sun. (In case there's any LIFE magazine photo talent scouts reading.) "We would  lose deals if we didn't have product for tenants to move into," Barry says, noting that the park has had positive absorption every quarter since its inception, even during the Great Recession.

It's one thing to say you're bullish on the Charlotte market—which Fabyan (seen here at one of his past Ballentyne Bashes) certainly says—but it's a whole other level of confidence to  plow ahead  with the "country's largest spec office project with a 2012 delivery." Bissell still has its eyes on the long-term prize, developing out all of the corporate park's 6.5M SF of space, and it's got  another 3M SF or so to go (their strategy is a full-on Ironman).
