Same Chimes, Different Home: NBC Plans New Needham HQ

NBCUniversal is taking up more than Boston airwaves with its plan to build a 165K SF New England broadcast and digital media center.

The media giant has been active in the local market since it severed its franchise agreement with Channel 7 and launched its own NBC Boston channel on New Year's Day this year. NBC’s Channel 10 has been operating out of a Newton studio with NBC-owned NECN and Telemundo. The new space in the Needham Crossing office park would house 375 employees, the Boston Globe reports.

The company plans to make the move by early 2019 and is already considering taking an additional 50K SF in its new complex, which once housed aerospace and defense contractor General Dynamics.

NBC is vying for $2M in property tax breaks, which would be the second such incentive package in Needham town history, after TripAdvisor got $1.8M for its nearby headquarters. NBC’s new home will add to a burgeoning media corridor along the Needham/Newton border, which now includes the trip review site, GateHouse Media and ABC affiliate WCVB-TV.
