Because Everyone Now Shops At Aldi, The Retailer Adds 500K SF To Its Midlands HQ

Aldi's Chicago-area operation inked the largest suburban office lease during Q3 2018.

Aldi, the fast-growing discount grocer, is planning to add another 201K SF of offices to its HQ at Atherstone as part of a 516K SF extension.

planning application submitted to North Warwickshire Council shows 201K SF of new offices, 183K SF of multi-storey car parking and 140K SF of new ambient and chilled warehousing.

In a statement supporting the application Aldi said they expected the £57M development to be phased over four years. The document predicts it will create 865 new jobs.

Plans to build on a 13-acre plot at Holly Lane, Atherstone, are expected to be decided by the council early this summer.

Figures released last week show Aldi now claiming 7.3% of total U.K. grocery spending, the German retailer's highest yet. The data, from Kantar Worldplanel, now puts Aldi ahead of the Co-op as the U.K.'s fifth-largest supermarket chain.

Aldi announced plans to double its store count to 1,000 by 2022 — and today it has just over 700 outlets. Observers say doubling store count will roughly double turnover, meaning Aldi breaks into the Big Four supermarket league — Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury — or, together with Lidl, turns the Big Four into the Big Six.
