Should You Rent Or Buy?

Renting? It'll cost you the same to own a house in Baltimore, according to CoStar's Erica Champion. Rents have remained stable, as the city has no geographic barriers or scarcity of land to throw supply and demand out of whack. Home prices, which have wobbled in other US markets, also stayed stable across the Baltimore metro. Costs vary drastically from the CBD to the 'burbs, though. Class-A apartments in the CBD rent for $2,100, Erica says, compared to $1,300 across the metro--so buying in the 'burbs would cost a lot less than renting Downtown. And as conversions throw more high-quality supply online in the CBD, rents might actually bump higher there (though concessions may counter that effect).
