How Klein Will Follow Up the SSA

Baltimore

Now that Klein Enterprises and JBG’s 538k SF 6100 Wabash Ave—otherwise known as the new Social Security Administration building—opened on Tuesday, Klein has five more projects to break ground on in 2014. (No rest for the weary or office developers.)

Yesterday, the company’s president, Dan Klein (snapped with his wife, Anna, at the SSA ribbon-cutting) told us he can divulge info about only three of them, though. (At least we know he can keep a secret.) Dirt will move in late spring or early summer on 285 apartments in Harford County, in the summer on a 90k SF grocery-anchored shopping center in St. Mary’s County, and in early fall on 350 apartments in Northeast Baltimore across from Franklin Square Medical Center.

As for the SSA project, Dan tells us JBG is a frequent builder for the GSA, and Klein brought its local expertise to the JV. Here’s how they came to partner on the GSA’s RFP: JBG co-founder Ben Jacobs (the J in JBG) is married to Dan’s father’s cousin. As the Kleins left dinner at the Jacobs' one night, someone said, "We should work together some time." And a year later came the GSA’s RFP.
