BIG PLANS FOR RETAIL
We dropped by National Harbor yesterday for ICSC Mid-Atlantic, where developers and retailers were dusting off old plans and showing off new ones in anticipation of continued economic recovery.Owings Mills Mall was among those showcasing its wares. (Think of it like the World's Fair, without new types of sodas or a new-fangled thing called a Ferris wheel.)
Tom Simmons, National Harbor, Feb. 22, 2012
We snapped Kimco Mid-Atlantic and Northeast prez Tom Simmons, who tells us his firm's first JV with General Growth Properties, the $80M renovation of Owings Mills Mall, "is a great case study of a regional mall that has been outpositioned by competing malls, but now has a chance to be redeveloped." It'll become a town center project (fashion and big-box), with 500k SF of the existing 1M being torn down and rebuilt. "Our project stands out because infrastructure is already in place to serve a strong retail market with a new destination venue," Tom says. Of course, there are a few other shopping options in the works, like David S. Brown's Metro Centre(under construction) and Greenberg Gibbons' Foundry Row at the Solo Cup site.
