Vacations of the Overworked

What have you been up to this summer? We took a survey of some of the vacations and staycations of folks in the DC legal community.

Lawyer and Peris Birch Construction Services CEO Elizabeth Birch spent 10 days climbing mountains in Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro—including the highest peak in Bosnia, where this picture was taken.

Elizabeth was joined by Kilpatrick partner Chris Gattuso, who generally focuses on corporate and securities work, financial institution regulatory matters and M&A, when she isn't hiking 10 to 12 miles per day.

All hikers know you need good socks. Here's Elizabeth buying a couple of pairs from an elderly woman in the only old village to survive the war in Bosnia.

Duane Morris DC chair Sheila Hollis visited England to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta alongside the royal family at Runnymede. While in the UK, she snapped this picture at the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in St. Ives, Cornwall. (Dame Hepworth has a piece called "Figure" on display at the Kennedy Center.)

Closer to home, Sheila took in another anniversary: the Centennial Celebration of the ABA Journal in Chicago. She's pictured with her husband, John Hollis. Sheila served as chair of the Board of Editors from 2007 to 2010, and as a member of the board from 2000 to 2007.

Legal search consultant Stuart TenHoor hit Maui for his summer break. He captured the moment on a snorkel boat that he spotted a shark (or a "big fish," as they call them on the islands).

Hawaii was paradise, says Stuart. (That wouldn't be a bad view to take in while getting some legal work done.)

Mayer Brown Global Brand Management and Internet practice co-leader Brian Winterfeldt enjoyed the Citi Open with client and friend Sara Blotner, in-house at Citi, and her husband and son.

McGuireWoods labor and employment partner Stephen Robinson snapped this shot of the full moon rising over Jungfrau in Interlaken, Switzerland. (Some of the dozens of professional athletes he's represented could probably sprint up to that summit in no time.)

Perkins+Will's Ken Wilson headed out west, including visiting the Natural Bridge National Monument in southern Utah. For scale, consider that the tiny figure in the lower right-hand corner of the photograph is his wife. What did you do this summer? Send us a picture to Roksana@bisnow.com.
