Team Ballard Spahr turned out in full force this weekend for the inaugural Susan G. Komen Promise Ride. The firm raised more than $32k for breast cancer research, screening, diagnosis and outreach, making up nearly half of the $76.4k total raised by the bike race.

Since this was the first time Komen did a bike event, it had 120 riders, says Ballard Spahr mixed-use development and condominiums team leader Roger Winston. "We are working with them to make a much bigger event next year."

The law firm's team biked 66 miles through Maryland's Anne Arundel and Calvert counties, led by team captain and Ballard Spahr commercial real estate partner Des Connall. Des and his daughter Kristin biked in honor of Des' wife, Janie Connall, who passed away two years ago after a six-year battle with breast cancer. Another partner, Jon Laria, lost his mother to breast cancer and his wife is a breast cancer survivor. Several others on the team were also breast cancer co-survivors, and many of the volunteers were breast cancer survivors.

Team Ballard also recently rode 100 miles for charity in the MS Society Chesapeake Challenge.
