Harris Teeter plans to close two Arlington locations, one in Tysons and another in North Bethesdalocal news outlets reported, citing email notices to customers.

The notices come just days after its parent company, Kroger, announced it would close 60 “underperforming” stores over the next 18 months, equating to 5% of its total locations.

The local stores reportedly set to shutter are at 950 S. George Mason Drive and 3600 S. Glebe Road in Arlington, 8200 Crestwood Heights Drive in Tysons, and 11845 Old Georgetown Road in North Bethesda.

Harris Teeter didn't respond to a request for comment.

The George Mason Drive location opened in 53K SF on the ground floor of Orr Partners' Centro Arlington in 2019. The three others have been open for at least 15 years, the Washington Business Journal reported.

The Glebe Road store is located in the Eclipse condo building, completed in 2006. The Tysons store is at Monogram Residential Trust's The Lofts at Park Crest apartment building. And in North Bethesda, the store is in LCOR’s Wentworth Apartment Homes.

“Unfortunately, today, not all of our stores are delivering the sustainable results we need,” Kroger interim CEO Ron Sargent said on the company’s earnings call Friday.

He said offloading the properties would “make the company more efficient.”

Even as it is offloading stores, Kroger plans to open 30 Harris Teeter locations this year, an executive said on the earnings call, focusing on “high-growth areas.” It opened another Arlington location in April 2024 at 624 N. Glebe Road.

Harris Teeter operates 261 stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and D.C., according to its website.
