Construction Begins On Walnut Creek Affordable Housing Project

Affordable housing is coming to East Contra Costa County. Resources for Community Development and the City of Walnut Creek broke ground on a $37M affordable housing project earlier this month, reports the East Bay Times. The 58-unit Rivera Family Apartments will offer studios to three-bedroom units split into two buildings. The project will be completed in 2018.

The development received $5M from the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities’ Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, a statewide cap-and-trade program. Rivera is the first complex in Contra Costa County to use cap-and-trade funding. Oakland also received $50M from this program for affordable housing projects late last month.

The Rivera apartments will be close to shopping and BART and have easy access to County Connection buses. Residents will receive a three-year bus pass for County Connection and have access to 112 bike-storage spots.

The City of Walnut Creek contributed $6M, the Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development put $2M into the mix and the state Department of Housing and Community Development offered $2.8M for this project. [EBT]
