Last week was the latest edition of the Humanitini happy hour series — The Intersection of Punk & Go-Go Music in D.C. — at Satellite Room. Here are the panelists: George Washington University music department’s Kip Lornell, George Mason University Department of Integrative Studies Assistant Professor Shayna Maskell, Ronald Moten, who has produced four Go-Go Award events at the Washington Convention and Lincoln Theatre, including the ceremony where Chuck Brown was inducted into the Go-Go Hall of Fame, and moderator Pamela Perkins.
The Humanitini series is where Washington's creators come together to think, drink and speak with experts about what makes D.C. a unique place to live and play. This month’s happy hour focused on Washington’s music scene, which gave birth to go-go and punk music, and hosts a surprising number of local labels and innovative performance spaces. The panel spoke about the cultural intersections between the District’s go-go and punk scenes, where do the two musical genres overlap, and what sort of innovations have emerged.
