Last night we also went to The Kennedy Center for the 6th annual DC College Access Program (DC-CAP) DC-CAPital Stars Talent Competition, showcasing 10 finalists from DC public and public charter schools competing in vocal, dance, and instrumental performances to win college scholarships. We snapped DC Schools chancellor Kaya Henderson, who received the award for Educator of the Year and said, “It’s not your mother’s DCPS. We are a school district that is on the rise.” She’s bookended by The Raben Group’s Robert Raben and former DC-CAP board member Sam Schreiber.
The theme was A Tribute to Broadway, and included dancing and singing to classic tunes from musicals like CATS, Chicago, and Rent. Here, former ‘Skins’ linebacker Ken Harvey and his wife designer Janice Harvey at the post-show reception.
Tony-award winning celebrity judge Savion Glover mingled with fans after the show. The famed dancer and choreographer said he was so impressed with drummer Kweku Sumbry, who won the $10,000 college scholarship, that he offered him the chance to work with him on a show in New York.
