Nonprofit community health center Whitman-Walker held its annual Going the Extra Mile cocktail reception this week at Long View Gallery. We snapped the event co-chairs: Wiley Rein managing partner Peter Shields and Johnson & Johnson VP Maggie FitzPatrick. WW was founded in 1973 and has a special expertise in LGBTQ and HIV care.

Many attorneys were in the crowd, and we spotted Nixon Peabody DC office managing partner Jeff Lesk with NP partner and former FDA associate chief counsel Areta Kupchyk. Jeff tells us the office is soon moving to its new location at 799 Ninth St. (Last year, he showed us around the building—including its rooftop.) Whitman-Walker itself just opened a new seven-story HQ at 1525 14th St.
Last year, Whitman-Walker served the legal needs of 2,500 people in 4,000 different cases, says director of patient legal services Amy Nelson. A GW Law grad, she also started the first local Name and Gender Change Clinic in '12.
SaVanna Wanzer was honored with the inaugural Fenner Award for Community Service, named for the late Robert Fenner Urquhart, who passed away in March. The award was presented by Jennifer Vance, who'd been Fenner's close friend and medical power of attorney. SaVanna is the founder of Capital Trans Pride and a longtime Whitman-Walker board member.
