Life as a lawyer can be fast-paced. Patrick McGlone, SVP, GC, and chief compliance officer of insurance and financial services for holding company Ullico, also keeps it in high gear in his free time, enjoying spending time riding a motorcycle. Before joining Ullico in '02, Pat was in-house at US Office Products Company and Mobil, and spent time as a commercial litigator at FDIC and Hunton & Williams.

Foley & Lardner IP partner Steve Maebius takes to the seas—or nowadays, to the Washington Sailing Marina. (This windsurfing shot of Steve is from Lake Michigan.) When he's not on the water, the former USPTO patent examiner is busy with matters both large (his IP practice; sitting on the firm's management committee) and tiny (helping found and edit the Nanotechnology Law & Business journal).

Andy Roth is Dentons' privacy and security group legacy co-chair, focused on helping companies build strong data governance. He joined from American Express, where he'd been chief privacy officer for its 60,000 employees and millions of clients. While making sure data's secure, he didn't mind letting loose and trying out skydiving.

Crowell & Moring labor and employment partner Jeffrey Pagano and trial practice team leader Keith Harrison teamed up to take on a drag-racing competition. For them, Hot Rod Magazine's Drag Week involved five races over 1,054 miles in Keith's '55 Chevy. When Keith, a former Assistant District Attorney for Manhattan, isn't racing in muscle cars, you can probably find him in a courtroom in the midst of a jury trial.

Part of Wiley Rein partner Greg Cirillo's practice is in the skies—aviation transactions, including helping corporations and high-wealth individuals lease, acquire, or finance private planes—but his hobby takes place on the racetrack. He enjoys racing in his ultra-light Spec Racer Ford, a hobby he picked up after he turned 50.

Dickstein partner James Brady has taken his motorcycle on cross-country trips. On one, he covered 5,200 miles through Sedona over two and a half weeks on his bike, a BMW R1200GS. James joined Dickstein 25 years ago and is in the IP practice, specializing in patents for pharma, biotech, and chemical industries.

Sterne Kessler managing director Mike Ray also has a BMW R1200. He's even braved the DC traffic to ride it to work. The IP firm's been at 1100 New York Ave for the past 21 years; this year, it underwent a full-scale renovation, adding 33k sq ft to build out conference rooms, add loads of glass, upgrade technology, and put in a barista station. (Not to mention, our favorite part: the game room with ping pong, shuffleboard, and skeeball.)

DLA Piper aerospace, defense, and government services transactional practice co-chair Jeff Houle has done hundreds of dives in waters around the world. That includes cage diving with great white sharks in South Africa. (After facing real sharks, we imagine the "lawyers are sharks" joke loses its sting.) Both a lawyer in the US and an English solicitor, Jeff reps companies in industries from energy to telecom in M&As.
