An "enormous area of expansion" in labor law is whistleblower litigation, says Connie Bertram, who justjoined Proskauer as its DC labor and employment practice co-chair. (You may remember her as Cooley's former employment & labor and government contractor compliance head.) Nearly every act recently passed by Congress has included a whistleblower protection component, from Dodd-Frank to Consumer Product Safety Act to SOX (if that's up your alley, look out for Connie's presentation before the ABA this month). Other growing topics: employment mobility--with a slight uptick in the economy late last year, folks moving into new opportunities are looking for ways out of restrictive covenants like non-competes; and compliance--on which the Obama administration is very focused. Proskauer's 160-lawyer labor employment group is one of the largest, and it's recently boosted its presence in DC, LA, Chicago, and Paris.
