DLA Piper global pro bono affiliate New Perimeter recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. One of the nonprofit's key focuses is building the capacity of law students and practicing lawyers around the globe, says assistant director and senior international pro bono counsel Sara Andrews.

New Perimeter recently returned from Zambia, where it held its fourth annual, weeklong legal writing and analysis seminar for law students at the University of Zambia School of Law. Partnering with lawyers from global pharma company Boehringer Ingelheim and DLA Piper Africa Group firm Chibesakunda & Co Advocates, the team led workshops this month for 119 students on legal writing, research and formulating legal arguments.

During this seminar, the University of Zambia students were on their spring break, so the attendees were there on their own time.

"It was such an engaging group of young people," says DC complex commercial litigation associate Mason Hubbard, one of the DLA Piper lawyers to make the trip. Before joining the law firm, she worked with the DOJ and with an NGO focused on the rule of law in countries including Zambia and Rwanda.

"It's always an incredible experience to work with students who are so motivated and eager to engage with our team of lawyers," Sara says, who helped develop the partnership with the law school five years ago. "It's really a two-way street in terms of who benefits."

Other upcoming New Perimeter projects include an August training in Nairobi for government lawyers, a legal education project in Myanmar, and training in Bolivia for Latin American regulators on consumer financial protection mechanisms.
