Terrence Gaskin, a DC native, was launching an after-market automobile customization shop in Texas a few years ago when he realized one product he couldn’t offer was a way to prevent tires from being stolen. He came back to DC and launched Project Overlord in 2014 to create an anti-theft alarm and tracking device that attaches to a tire. It alerts its owner via iPhone or Android when someone gets too close or touches the tire. The police are contacted when the tire is moved less than 1/8th inch and GPS tracks the tire within 10 feet of where it's taken. The 10-person company is launching an Indiegogo next Tuesday to raise funds to manufacture the product. Media/PR SVP Erica Krauss says eventually Project Overlord will develop similar tech to track tires on other vehicles, like construction and farm equipment, motorcycles, bikes, boats and ATVs. The plan is to have RimTech, the company's first product, available in October and to sell it to major car manufacturers and consumers as an after-market product.
