The Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church wants to welcome dozens of seniors to live on its Tenleytown property.

The church filed an application Thursday with the Board of Zoning Adjustments to build a four-story, 86-unit, continuing care retirement community on its 3920 Alton Place NW property.

The application calls for demolishing the existing church on the property and setting aside space for a new church on the first and second floors of the senior living building. The church would have a 250-seat sanctuary and meeting space. It also proposes building a 66-space underground parking garage.

Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church is partnering with Sunrise Senior Living to build and operate the retirement community. Moseley Architects designed the project. The site, on 35K SF of land, sits one block north of Tenley Circle and two blocks from the Tenleytown-AU Metro station.

Sunrise first presented plans to the local Advisory Neighborhood Commission in October, and one commissioner has voiced concerns over mixing the church and retirement community in the same building. The BZA is scheduled to hold a hearing on the proposal Oct. 10.
