Forty-six miles northwest of Washington, D.C., people have flocked to Loudoun County for quieter streets, fresher air and a nationally recognized public school system.
While the suburb continues to boast strong educational opportunities, it is now embracing a new type of urbanism, designing places and destinations with community, walkability and the environment in mind. Loudoun has become a hub for transportation and data center operations, while maintaining the live-work-play lifestyle.
Loudoun County is home to Dulles International Airport, which serves as the Greater D.C. region’s main international airport. For years, the airport has serviced over 20,000 passengers annually, but wasn’t directly accessible by Metrorail. To create a direct connection, the Silver Line extension to Dulles and beyond in Loudoun is currently under construction.
In addition to Dulles, the expansion will also add station stops at Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Route 606 and Route 772. The Silver Line expansion is expected to not only make Dulles Airport more accessible, but provide another transportation alternative for people commuting to and from their offices.
Loudoun County has also established a name for itself in the data center industry that supports the connectivity needs of mobile and internet users all over the world. Tucked away in Ashburn, Virginia, a concentration of the facilities, called Data Center Alley, is home to over 4.6M SF of data center space representing 616 megawatts of power. Data Center Alley’s corporate residents include data center giants like RagingWire, Equinix and Digital Realty.
Major cloud providers like Google and Apple Web Services lease space in Data Center Alley, and 70% of the world’s internet traffic crosses through Loudoun County.
