Ambitious plans are in the works for a 115-acre section of southwest DC. Plans to create a highly sustainable SW Ecodistrict by 2030 have been revealed by the National Capital Planning Commission. The area south of the National Mall will be transformed into a "high-performance" showcase that'll reduce both energy and greenhouse gases by half, while cutting potable water by up to 70%. Construction is anticipated to be spread out over a period of 10 years, and although no plans have been finalized, there are 17 federal and local agencies involved in the early stages, Curbed reports. Among the highlights: a planned district energy system that'll utilize a process known as co-generation to create energy, heat and cool the buildings; and a proposed urban garden promenade for an area along 10th Street.
