The future of social entrepreneurship will be shaped in a 227-year-old mansion in Washington. The S&R Foundation renovated the Halcyon House to start an incubator to solve some of the world’s biggest concerns.

Halcyon Incubator is looking for entrepreneurs who have an idea for a business or nonprofit that makes a positive social impact on the world. Based in Georgetown, the fellows will spend 12 to 16 months on their projects, including four months to live in the mansion for free and eight months of rent-free workspace. They also get complimentary strategic, legal, and PR resources, mentorship, and access to a network of potential funders. (Who knew that the TV show Big Brother was actually an early example of social entrepreneurship?)

Halcyon Incubator requires no equity in return and just asks for the entrepreneurs to commit to growing ideas to achieve social change. S&R Foundation COO Kate Goodall says the nation’s challenges require a new way of thinking, fearless approaches, and a collaborative support system. The historic Halcyon House was bought by the founders of the S&R Foundation in 2011. The first class will begin Sept. 1.
