Up-and-coming leaders focused on affordable housing and community development have a new supportive program to tap into through the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers. The group recently kicked off its Generation HAND with a happy hour and panel that included people like United Way NCA’s Rosie Allen-Herring, JAIR LYNCH’s Jair Lynch and Homes for America’s Nancy Rase. Some takeaways: Emerging leaders need to specialize in one area but still understand all aspects of their industry, including design and construction; they should get to know a mentor, an adviser and a sponsor; join boards; give people a reason to say “yes” when asking for a promotion; and don’t be afraid to negotiate title, money, responsibility and time.
