African American boys under age 10 are more likely to be mistaken as older, be perceived as guilty, and face police violence if accused of a crime than white boys the same age, according to a new study published by the American Psychological Association. Research author Phillip Atiba Goff tested police officers and undergrad women, both mostly white, who said children up to 9 years old were equally innocent regardless of race but considered black children significantly less innocent than other children in every age group beginning at age 10. Stereotypes played a big role in their answers but Phillip says more research needs to be done to clarify the relationship between dehumanization and racial disparities.
