If you’ve spent any time breathing in the last week, you’ve surely seen videos of people dumping buckets of ice on their heads. (Muscular Dystrophy Association president Steve Derks was one of the most recent.) The ALS Association, the DC nonprofit that’s spearheading the Ice Bucket Challenge, says it’s received $15.6M in donations from the campaign, compared to $1.8M during the same time last year. The donations have come from existing donors and 308,000 new ones. It’ll use the money to provide care to people with ALS, an incurable disease that only has one drug approved by the FDA. Funds are also used for research and public policy efforts.
