The longtime home of American Legion Post 139 in Virginia Square could soon be redeveloped into a seven-story affordable housing complex.

The Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing last month submitted a preliminary proposal with the county that calls for 161 multifamily units on the site at 3445 Washington Blvd., ARLnow reports.

APAH is working with architect DCS Design on the project. The development would also include 8K SF of ground-floor space for American Legion to remain on the site, plus a 96-space parking garage and a 48-space bicycle storage room.

The residential units would include 48 one-bedrooms averaging 555 SF, 87 two-bedrooms averaging 950 SF and 25 three-bedrooms averaging 1,150 SF. The proposal does not detail the level of affordability of the units, but APAH is a nonprofit with a mission of building and preserving affordable homes in Arlington.

The American Legion property sits roughly a quarter-mile north of the Virginia Square-GMU Metro station and across the street from a Giant supermarket. Two additional developments are planned on the same block, a new 100K SF YMCA facility and a 220-unit apartment building.
