European grocery chain Lidl is planning an aggressive expansion into the US with more than 150 stores, and one of its first will be in Philadelphia.
Lidl, which specializes in discount groceries much like fellow European chain Aldi, bought two parcels totaling four acres on Butler Street by Aramingo Avenue in the Port Richmond area, near a Walmart and a ShopRite. A Lidl has also been included in presentations for a mixed-use project by Bart Blatstein, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Lidl paid $2.8M for the Port Richmond site, which contains an old industrial building, according to city records. It plans to pair its two planned Philadelphia locations with several in the suburbs.
The company plans on 2018 openings for its first American locations. Its US HQ is in the DC suburbs, where it's also been buying land to open its first slew of stores. [Philly]
