Eight cities have won the opportunity to get expert advice on using data to improve their cities. Jackson, MS; Mesa, AZ; Tulsa, OK; Seattle, WA; Chattanooga, TN; Kansas City, MO; Louisville, KY; and New Orleans, LA are the first winners of the "What Works Cities" competition, sponsored by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The $42M, 100-city data-use program will collect data like foreclosure rates and public transit performance, and make it public, allowing for a decision-making process based on the numbers, ABC News reports. It's available to midsized cities ranging from 100,000 to 1 million people. More than 110 cities have applied so far, and winners will be announced through 2017. [ABC]
