$2.8B Deal Creates Cybersecurity Data Center Firm Cyxtera Technologies

Private equity firm Medina Capital and BC Partners just completed a $2.8B deal to form Cyxtera Technologies, a new data center company that will focus on international cybersecurity.

The deal was announced back in November and negotiations have been underway these past six months. The new company will combine a worldwide portfolio of 57 CenturyLink data centers with four cybersecurity and data analytics companies, the Miami Herald reports. Cyxtera CEO Manny Medina said current cybersecurity safeguards are outdated, and instead of relying on firewalls or virtual private networks, the company will look at security in a way that protects the entire infrastructure.

Experts said cybersecurity has become increasingly important in real estate, especially as the Internet of Things advances. While computers and smartphones come with protections, smart buildings hooked up to the IoT are typically much more susceptible to outside attacks.
