Multifamily Investors Change the World

Investors with a heart. Dallas-based Behind Every Door has found them. The multifamily ownership group is about transforming neighborhoods (and lives) with a strategy that turns a profit.

Behind Every Door is a for-profit group, with investors and a few banks buying Class-C apartment complexes for the purpose of making life better for the residents. That's founding principal Dean Wilson at a holiday celebration (pay attention, kid, you can nap some other time!) at one of the companys two Dallas projects-- Village Oaks and Willow Pond. The idea: care for the people in the complex by partnering with churches, community outreach, and specialty agencies. It can also mean improving the assets to bring a sense of dignity and home to the apartments.

Dean says when the group bought the 488-unit Village Oaks, there wasnt one flower on the grounds. It has since been landscaped, painted, and the interiors remodeled. When you make life better for the people, you can potentially transform the whole neighborhood, he says. The driving force is building community in a for-profit model. Heres Sen. Rick Santorum at Village Oaks a few weeks back, visiting the Kids Club. Rick also participated in a luncheon with business and community leaders to talk about private sector solutions for inner-city challenges.
