So where would you expect us to find the glamorous LA real estate crowd at dinner this weekend but restaurants like West Hollywood's Madeo (often staked out by TMZ)? Confession: We were there with Newmark retail king Jay Luchs, right, and ran into Simon Mani (yes, one half of the famed Mani Brothers, with buildings like 9000 and 9200 Sunset, 801 S Figueroa, and 1401 Ocean). Simon tells us he's got plans to take the Malibu Beach Inn to the next level. It was already at a pretty high level, considering David Geffen sold the Carbon Beach landmark to the Mani Brothers in February for a reported $1.7M a room, the highest per key price in California history. This month, Simon says, he brought over former Shutters GM Gregory Day to both run the Inn and take on a new role as head of all hospitality for Mani Brothers. Sounds to us like there could be some other hotel plans ahead.
