A proposed five-story, 220-unit apartment building in Torrance is being criticized by local residents who are pleading with the city to think twice before approving it.

Their concerns, documented in a 558-page final environmental impact report released last week, center on increased traffic in their neighborhood, the Daily Breeze reports.

The project, the Picerne Apartments, would be built at the corner of Crenshaw and Lomita boulevards.

It would exceed the two-story height limit in residential zones and would require a General Plan Amendment, which City Manager Ryan Smoot said planners would recommend the approval of.

The project would include 35 studio apartments, 134 one-bedroom apartments and 51 two-bedroom units.

A planning commission public hearing to discuss the project is scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at City Hall, 24300 Narbonne Ave.

If the planning commission approves the project, the city council would make a final decision in the fall.
