| Treadwell & Rollo to the rescue—once again! Geotechnical engineer Lori Simpson (with her environmental engineering colleague, Jeff Ludlow) explains the delicate process that has reinforced The UCSF Mission Bay Neuroscience Laboratory Building 19A. The initial problem: the campus is underlain by heterogeneous fill and weak and compressible bay mud. To overcome the challenge, Lori’s team performed an intense investigation and provided recommendations regarding pile foundations, below-grade walls, seismic design, utilities, and earthwork. The secondary problem: not making a peep during construction (classes and research are in progress.) With 20 years of experience with subsurface conditions at Mission Bay, Lori ably handled the foundation design. Jeff’s team dealt with a literally explosive dilemma—methane gas within the fill layer.
