GE’s Unmanned Aircraft Subsidiary Will Operate From Fort Point HQ

A General Electric venture to aid an array of government agencies, aviation entities and private firms with the management of unmanned aircraft has been spun off into a wholly owned subsidiary, but will still work out of the company’s Boston headquarters.

AirXOS, which was only mentioned by the Boston-based company last month, was first described as a brand that will help with drone safety over Central New York. The May launch said the new company would collaborate with the Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research Alliance with the intent of making the region a hub for the drone industry. AirXOS will operate from GE’s Farnsworth building in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood, the Boston Business Journal reports.

AirXOS has partnerships with a variety of locations beyond New York, including Memphis. The Tennessee city’s airport authority announced in May it was one of 10 federal partners in a plan by the Trump administration to accelerate America’s unmanned aircraft systems.

"GE already has been using drones and drone technology for some time,” AirXOS General Manager Kenneth Stewart said in a prepared statement. “What AiRXOS offers is the infrastructure and advanced operations necessary to unlock the emerging markets of autonomous flight."

While it is unknown exactly how large the GE subsidiary is, a GE spokesperson told the BBJ the company has tripled in size in a year.
